Summer is Here!

When I was in London, I stuffed my face with the juiciest strawberries, blueberries, cherries, satsumas, tangerine, nectarines, apricots, peaches and god knows what else! They are so delicious there.. well, what can I say?? These fruits are grown there and they get them fresh.. Anyway, when I got back, I wanted to do a tart with these fruits, so, I created this mascarpone cream for the filling, a very light and crispy crust and the fruits. The result...

Heh! heh! heh!..the cream is luxurious! Just right in the creamy department with a smooth and silky texture. Surprisingly, although it's a big contrast from the texture of the crust which is light and crispy, it compliments. Together it reminded me of opposites attract! Hehehehe.. and it's sinfully addictive! I watch my testers' reaction as they take each spoonfuls of this tart and waited to see if they will take 2nd helpings.. and yes! they did! Hoorah!

This tart reminded me of Eton mess that I tried in London.. all the contrasting texture come together and create an awesome exprience in the mouth! Hahahaha.. and such awesomeness can only bring happy memories and thoughts! For me, that is London and for a lot of people in 4 seeason countries, it can only be summer!

This is for sale at RM85 per tart.. enought to feed a party of 25-30 people.

Cloud - A dreamy cake..

Ok.. I am no big fan of soft like cotton food... For one, I got teeth, for another, I find such food very mushy. I like my food firm and with texture.. so, if you ask me, I am no big fan of the above. I made that because I was having friends over for tea and I know they like such cotton food. Hehehehe..

So, back to this Cloud.. hehehe.. it is easy to make..infact, I used to make this to give away to my monster's teachers during all sorts of celebration. Yup, easy to make, most people like to eat and it definitely look very yumms!

Anyway, back to my little tea party.. yes,! everybody love this.. Heh! heh! heh!.. this with a hot cup of moroccon mint tea....

Party Food - Roast Chicken with Rocket sandwiches

Did I mentioned that I went to British Museum in London twice? Oh yes, the museum is so big, I had to do it in 2 days.. 2 full days!! And during the 2nd trip back to British Museum, I came across this very unique sandwich... Yes, I was hungry and desperate for a bite!!

I had this really yummy sandwich that had simple ingredients.. roast chicken and rocket.. the combination was simply mind blowing and addictive. I love the way the peppery taste from rocket leaves compliment the roast chicken and tomatoes and other condiments and with an orange juice or warm tea, it is yumms!!

Anyway, since I am back here with no really yummy bread in sight that is REALLY BREAD and not some cottony mush, I set out to make my own bread and create this sandwich..yes, I miss London.. I miss their super delicious food! and I must say, I did quite well with this sandwich. I served them to my friends for tea today! I intend to propose this for parties.. hehehe..

Kitty With Presents

Ruby is into Helly Kitty this year and her aunt commissioned me to make her a Hello Kitty cake! Hehehehe... and I came up with this. Technically, I would like to have the cake higher as in taller but, since this cake is to be brought to school to celebrate, I decided against a tall cake. It would be very difficult for Ruby's mom to cut and serve the kids if it is a tall cake... and kids, are not very good with eating a tall piece of cake! Yes, adults have difficulty too. So, a appropriate height was made..

This is a marbled butter cake and weigh in at 2kg. This was sold for RM250.. and yes, hello Kitty was hand moulded using fondant... and double yes! in such cranky weather, it was a challenge!

How Can You Mend A Broken Heart

All of us have one time or another encountered the most dreadful part of life and that is, to have our heart shattered. Most of the time by what GOD said to be the most powerful of all the 3 essential qualities that make us human.. LURVE!

Recently, I observed some of my friends having to go through this painful phrase of their lives. Some are married and at near mid life and wham! they are slapped with such earth shattering pain that kills them emotionally. Heart ache doesnt get any better with age.. trust me, they dont! And what makes it worse is the fact that one has "invested" so much into nurturing the relationship and now it is all gone.. one is so sure about how life is going suddenly turned chaotic and like a storm, it's turbulent and dark. Some of my friends on the other hand are not married and have to face the daunting future of having to start all over again.. back to the dating scene AGAIN. It gets a bit "earthquakey" when that happens over and over and over again..

As I watched my friends struggle through this challenging phrase of their lives, I am reminded of the times I was there. There are some unresolve emotions in me that I have yet to face and have not dare to face up till now.. I am no hero. I am a big coward.. I just avoid the whole heartache drama!! I just refuse to think about it, remember about it, avoid places that reminded me of it, I just wont go "there". I keep myself busy till I am too tired to care, I focus on a new mission, it can be anything from losing those concrete fats that cling onto me with such stubborness like it is their rightful place or it can be to concentrate on some idiocratic thing like trying to understand a french movie! The bottom line is.. DONT GO THERE!!

I refuse to cry or feel the pain until I know it is not so painful anymore. Not so painful anymore is when I can face the one that cause me such pain and not feel much or when anger dont make an appearance or tears wont roll down like a broken dam..It can take a few weeks to a few years.. but when I am good and ready, I will go THERE and redeem myself. In all my heartaches, there wasnt much of a "showcase".. No atomic explosion.. just plain turn around and walk off! It is not my style to waste another breath on something or someone who hurt me so badly. It's also not my style to do a turn around... Sigh... it takes great great effort for me to over come such "quest" and it's not in me to throw away these hard effort and be with that person again. Yaaaa, sigh.. I am not that forgiving...... Not good? Maybe...

Anyway, how do you deal with a broken heart? How can you mend a broken heart?

Seoul OUT?? Oh man!!

See the above?? That is Seoul, Korea... I am to go there...What am I to do there?? For one, I dont watch all these tedious soapy sobbing korean love dramas.. dont like korean food, most definitely dont speak Korean.. so, what am I to do there?? Can't be to see city lights right?? Sigh.. I live in a city ok.. city lights dont excite me.. infact, I think city lights are environmental disaster.. so, where I really want to go?? I really really wanna go back to...

Hawaii!! Yes, the above picture is Hanauma Bay in O'ahu, Hawaii.. I was there years ago and had a great time. The weather is more or less like here but without the humidity and plenty of cool breeze. NICE!! Hahahahaa.. did what every tourist would do.. go to Waikiki, infact I stayed there.. go climb Diamond Head, take the bus that went around the island.. went to Polynesian Cultural Center and learnt everything about Polynesians and the spirit of aloha, sit by the beach and watch the sunset and on Thursdays, learn to do the hula, learnt to eat poi, lomi-lomi salmon, hawaiian lau-lau, ahi poke, haupia and lots more. Also did go to North Shore and watch the waves.. the long bus ride just to see waves... hahahaha!!

I was bold too.. I hopped over to Big Island and took a round the island trip from Kona to Hilo and experience the wonders of having so many different climate on just one island.. some part is warm, some part is cold..Their beaches are also very unique.. they have black sand beaches and nope, I did not take any sand or rocks from Big Island home. Legend has it that Pele, the goddess of fire will make you very sick for taking her things and one can only get better when one return the "stolen" rocks or sand! Real or not, I am not trying! Did you know that this island is constantly growing?? It is.. and I went to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and see with my own eyes the wonders Kilauea...the life volcano spewing lava. Again, I was humbled by the beauty this world has to offer and promised myself that I must live my life fruitfully.. make it a point to live it!! dont waste precious time on bad things or events or bother with bad choices may it be career or people... make it a point to embrace and love life!!

So, can I trade Seoul for Hawaii?? oh ok.. time to talk to my bosss......... I think he will kill me! Wahahahahahahaa...

Glorious Gold - Pumpkin & Cranberry Cake

Lalalalala... this cake is super!! Really super!

I have this habit of surfing the net for new ideas and inspiration but not all the time, I will have the inspiration to try out these new ideas instantly. Yes, I am a bit of a "do only when I feel like it" type of girl.. the type that knows at the back of my mind that I need to get my ass to doing it but wont do it until one fine day, when the mood suits me, I will just get my ass to go do it! Ya, that is not very good..and I am working on it. Be patient.. Hahahaha!

Anyway, back to this cake.. where was I.. ooh.. haven't started about it.. so, as I was saying, surfing the net for new ideas and inspiration, yes, have been collecting all sorts of recipes from the net, some look dubious but nevertheless, interesting enough to capture my attention.. hence, I print them out and chuck them into my TO DO WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT folder.. so, this cake was one of them and yesterday, being a bit free and in the mood to whip up a cake, I decided to browse into my magic folder and came across this very torn and tattered looking paper that says Pumpkin, carrot cranberry cake with a purple ink remark saying "Wow! dont know will die eating this or not" So, feeling very funky and challenged, got all the ingredients ready, yes, including grating the pumpkin which I had in my fridge... and whip up this cake without much hope that it will turn out good.. Afterall, the ingredients proportion was a bit funky....

So, into the oven the tray of batter went and off I went to amuse myself with my new toy... half way thru, I smelt the cake and thought what a glorious smell... aaaaaaaaaahhhh!! so nice! and went to check on my cake.. was pretty pleased with the progress and since everything looks happening, I allow myself a little bit more hope... Hmm.. perhaps the cake will turn out good..

And when the cake was done.. all thrown out and cooled.. with great anticipation, I cut the cake and was very impressed with the texture.. very spongy but not dry.. very moist and flavorful! The first bite confirms it.. it is a love at first bite cake! Woo Hoo... didnt die eating it.. What a success!!

So, if you are thinking whether I will be making this cake again, it is a resounding YES!! AGAIN! when I get my hands on some delicious Japaneses pumpkin and perhaps the next round, I will add in a bit of nutmeg to compliment the pumpkin and carrot and almonds?

Yup.. once this is perfected, it will hit town.....

Passion about a Fruit

I came across this tiny fruit nicely tucked away hidden amongst creepers on someone's fence one fine morning while I was brisk walking... and I stop!

I stop because it has been a long time since I saw this cutie.. hehehe... I stop because it brought back a lot of happy memories... I stop because I was so smitten by its tiny flower that is so impressive...

Hello cutie.. the last time I saw such fruit was when I was in school and that is a very long time.. Gosh! that sounded like I am a dinosaur! Hahahaha.. well, this fruit used to grow aplenty creeping all over my school's fence or anything that it could creep on.. We used to pluck the yellow fruit and squeeze the content into our mouth. It has a very unique flavor and at that time, when I was in school, I was not expose to exotic fruits, hence didnt know that this is a passionfruit. We used to eat a lot of this.. partly because it was easily available and being poisoned wasn't part of our vocab.. hahahhaa.. And partly because this fruit is sweet! Heh! heh! heh!..

During my school days, I didnt pay much attention to its flower but today, when I see this fruit again, I was fascinated by its flower.. maybe it is because there were abundance of flowers in full bloom and they are simply lovely!! Pretty and lovely... just like any passionfruit flower, it has the vivid purple and white color with stigma that is a striking yellow.. but this species has small flowers...no more than a 50 cents coin.. very very dainty and pretty looking.. I like!!

So, not able to resist, I snapped some pictures and pluck off some of the fruits.. and of course! popped 2 into my mouth and once again taste the sweet, full of flavor passionfruit.. yes, with lots of crunchy seeds too.....hehehehe....

Some of The Food I had in London....

Yes, I ate and ate while I was in London and Scotland. The funny thing about traveling is that you dont pile on the weight.. Woo hoo... Basically, there were plenty of walking and it was no hassle or discomfort at all. The weather simply makes it great to walk. I could walk from Covent Garden to Leicester Square to Piccadilly to Trafalgar Square. So much beauty to see and explore that you wont feel the distance.. hehehehe.. with cool dry air and great window display or scenes along the way, would I grumble about walking? Hehehe..

Anyway, I had a great time eating all sorts of food in London.. I tried their cakes, cupcakes, scones, pastries, tarts, kebabs.. ooo.. they were all delicious! Yummms! The thing I noticed about their cakes is that they are not like those here.. the cakes in London has substance! The cakes are firm, may it be a loaf cake, butter cake or sponge cake.. it is nothing like ours here which are so laden with chemical that render the cake soft and cottony.. Every bite of their cakes, you could actually feel the texture of the cake in your mouth. It's how I remember cake to be.. those that I used to eat when I was young..

Cakes in London are also full of flavor.. there is no such nonsense as less sugar, less sweet there.. If you want to eat cake, you eat it full flavor!! Yeah... this is something I cannot comprehend about people here.. What is this nonsense about wanting to eat cake but dont like it sweet. What is cake if it is not sweet?? Flour, butter or egg tastes?? Yes, the people in London understood that cakes are not to be eaten everyday, everytime or as meals.. cakes are meant to be treats.. meant to be eaten sparingly.. meant to be eaten as luxury.. and as such, it is ok to have it full flavor as it should be. Yes! that's the word... as it should be!! Cakes should have a bite to it, cakes should be sweet with a lovely aroma to it no matter how plain it's.. A simple Victorian sandwich can give the same level of satisfaction as a funky sounding named cake.. Cakes should give one a happy fulfilling feel after a slice.. Cakes are not meant to taste or have a cottony texture.. Cakes are not meant to be tasteless.. not sweet and artificially flavored.. cake are most definitely not meant to be eaten and eaten and eaten and yet dont give that satisfied and happy feel... People should seriously seriously learn how to eat properly!!

Anyway, besides cakes and their lovely sandwiches, I had scones! Scones in London are super delicious.. it is very fluffy and rich in flavor.. the milk and freshly milled flour flavor combined with the freshest clotted cream and super delicious preserves simply make them yummy. What else, the ice cream that I had at Fortnum & Mason was to die for.. funky flavors such as strawberries with 12 years old balsamic vinegar, Bellini Classico, Stem Ginger with Borage Honey.. are some of the flavors I had and it is worth every single calorie had..

The Belgian Waffles were another must have! The best I have tasted was still the one at Covent Garden. The first time I had that was 7 years ago on a cold winter day and from that day onwards, I had always been on a look out for good Belgian waffles.. unfortunately, never could find any that came close to it here in Malaysia. So, for 7 good old years, I crave and miss that Belgian Waffles in Covent Garden.. So, naturally, I had to have it when I got to Covent Garden for the first time on a sunny but cold sunday afternoon... it was love at first sight all over again! Hahahaha.. of course, a long the way thru out my stay in London, I tried those sold along Oxford Street, markets or cafes and patisseries and although they are good... but it wasnt the same like that one at Covent Garden. That one is crispy but soft inside.. and when you bite it, its a mouthful of texture and the flavor is simply divine..sweet and comforting with a very fragrant caramel flavor..Aaaahhh.. life cannot get any better than being in Covent Garden..

The thing I experience in London is that I know I am on the right track with my cakes... No chemicals, no soft and cottony texture that end up being mushy in the mouth, not tasteless, less sugar, less sweet cakes. If must be, my cakes should be what cakes should be.. Sweet to give the happy feel.. full of texture and flavor so you will never have to wonder what was it that you have just eaten.. full of taste that will leave a good and satisfying impression....

Some pictures from my holiday

London.. my favorite place. I love London.. I never get bored going to London. There is so much to do in London.. Musicals to go to, markets to visit and see new things, try new things, shopping that is heavenly, flowers and gardens and parks that are not just pretty but a splendid place to just laze the day away under the sun. Yes, London is the only place I love having the sun.. I think it's the weather that makes the sun so appealing... so friendly..Aaaahhh... Spring is beautiful, windy, cold breeze, sun shinning..aaaaahhh.. Below is a very short account of what I did.. a fraction of what I did or the places I visited.. of course, the real itinerary was far far more.. more places, more things I see, eat, watch, observe and experience, more exciting! So, here is a short snippet of my London... the city I enjoy..

This is Windsor.. A small little place outside London.. away from the hussle bussle of life.. It is also the place where Queen E stays.. of course, Queenie stays in the ancient castle... majestic and mighty! Hoo hoo... What I like about Windsor is the fact that it is not very far from London and the quiet scenic town along River Thames.. the shops are located around the castle and it is a joy walking around!! Yes, shopping is also fun here.. food and clothes! Hehehe.. Oh! there is a crooked house too... apparently, there is a history to this house and a nursery rhyme to this! Hehehe.. and yes, I had english tea in this quaint place.. The scones was yummy and so was the fruit cake.. My trip to Windsor and Eton was made possible by Chooi and Alex.. thanks! hehehe..

Oh! by the way, I didnt get the chance to go into the castle.. Queenie was home.. flag flying high...

Musicals! Oh yes, we spend most of our evenings in London town going for musicals... From Million Dollar Quartet to Jersey Boys'.. London is so alive at night with these musicals.. People hang around for drinks after a great show.. couples sharing a snack.. the lights are dazzling, the sound and smell is simply seducing. London at night after a musical is always magical!!

Gardens and flowers - London is a very green place. They have plenty of parks, Green Park, St James Park, Hyde Park, etc.. Even in residential area, there are parks! What makes these parks so lovely is the fact that their weather is simply very soothing and enticing.. breezy and cool, blue sky with fluffy puffy white clouds floating about, sun shinning without frying you till crisp! It's lovely to sit in the park and have a picnic or a sandwich or just sit in the park and watch the day goes by. A lot of people do that in London! Mothers with their babies.. baby in pram while mama with a book, students clump up together deep in discussion on the grass, kids running around carefreely, old people sitting on the bench... aaaahh.. only in London!

Of course, these parks are well maintained by their respective councils and people.. Flowers are abundance! So are little creatures like squirrel and ducks. hehhehehe...It is clean and tidy..oooo.. I can just spend my days lazing around in one of these parks...

Oh! this picture you see above is from Kew Gardens. It's a must go, must get one's ass to this garden.. It is huge and lovely.. take your time to walk the whole garden to see everything.. Where do I begin?? Hehehe.. When I was there, I cannot help humming the tune "Golden Afternoon" to my monster and myself.. Haahahaa..."You can learn a lot of things from the flowers, For especially in the month of June, There's a wealth of happiness and romance, All in the Golden Afternoon" Lalalaa... All sorts of unique and common flowers, herbs, plants are found here... To make your trip more fun, try what I did.. take a boat ride from Westminster Pier to Kew Gardens.. it is awesome!! Hahahaha.. yup, cold and fun cruising along River Thames..

Markets! Lovely markets... Oh.. I never get bored going to these markets.. from Portobello to Borough to Hackney.. Plenty to see, plenty try, plenty to entice you!! From food to knicknacks to antique.. At Borough, you will see the most succulent and juicy fruits and vegetables of your choice, all sorts of meat, from Ostrich to cured meat, organic produce from sea salted unpasturized butter, largest meringue to all sorts of mustard! I even found mushroom pate and lovely lovely cheese... Oh.. if I live in London, markets will be where you will find me on weekends...

Shopping! It's shopaholic paradise in London! I love it! I truly love it.. for one, most stores are not cramped and tiny like the ones we have in Malaysia.. broad space to move around, merchandises are nicely displayed and enough stock for all to pick and chose, counter staff are courteous and friendly and.. importantly, the fashion and styles are endless!! The latest, the best are all over London. From Alexander McQueen to Cath Kidston are everywhere. I was spoilt for choice. Oh yes, I came back with very very overloaded luggage.. 3 pieces and plenty overloaded..

Around and about London.. a little Greek community hidden somewhere along Great Russell Street caught our eyes on our way to British Muzeum, the smell of bread in all shapes and size and taste from Borough Market is simply heavenly, Muzeums and more muzeums from British Muzeum to Cartoon Muzeum to Victoria & Albert Muzeum was exciting and enriching.. the bus rides around from one place to another is enjoyable..

Edinburgh, Scotland.. A very windy and cold place but I love it! I love the old gothic look this place has.. a very medieval feel as you walk around, like as if you are instantly transform back to the era of great Kings and Queens. The stone buildings that dotted the entire town that stand witness to times, the intricate designs and stain glasses that decorated these buildings, the royal mile with its coblerstone pavement instantly reminded me of scenes from Merlin... Aaaah... and oh! yes, I had the best scones ever in the castle.. it was simply awesome.. nothing like it.. with its delicious clotted cream and lovely preserves.. Yuuummms!!

Ok... back to my journey.. I took a train from London, King Cross station to Haymarket, Edinburgh. Total hours spent on the train was 4 hours.. and those 4 hours was passed beautifully with very scenic and pretty countryside. Plenty of farms dotted along the way and one can see flocks of sheeps, horses, cows lazing about in the field under the sun and lovely lovely fields of yellow wild flowers.

Basically, all I did in Edinburgh was to go the castle. Queen Mary of Scot's castle. It was huge and windy.. Hehehe.. now I know where people get that "blow your top off" expression! Hahahaa! The whole castle was like a little maze and I can understand why... people those days have a lot of time on their hands. Other than castle, it was glorious shopping along Princes Street!! Hehehe.. However, since shops closes at 6pm, the other times was spent having great dinners and watch TV.. wahahaha... To me, that is a great holiday. Oh yes, I will go back to London again.. and again and again.. and again.. and maybe for my next London trip, I will expand my adventure and cross the english channel! Hehehe.. visit other europe countries.. Germany perhaps??... Hahahahaa... Life is about Living IT! Life is GREAT!!
