When one of my ex school mate called up and ordered a cake for Feast Day, something in me was awakened! It has been ages since I heard of Feast Day. The last time was when I was in school. I went to a Convent school and I was one of the few lucky ones or rather, privileged ones to have been taught and governed by nuns. (yes, you can now narrow my age down.. Hehehe..) And yes, whatever they say about nuns as teachers and headmistress, believe it! They are all true.... They are the most dedicated, hardworking, righteous teachers around and you never go wrong in placing your child with them.. strict is the order of the day!!
Anyway, eons ago, whenever the Feast Day festival comes, usually around now, in the month of March and April, my school then had all sorts of activities. My headmistress, being a nun, instill in us, the value of god fearing, charity, compassion, the joy of giving and in so many ways, entrepreneurship. During this festival, one of the activities would be Charity day.. in accordance to our school's motto.. "Ad Veritatem, Per Caritatem" which means, To Truth Through Charity. It was always a fun time.. everyone will be busy thinking of new ways to do charity.. hahahahaha.. and at the end of the day, all money collected will be used to sustain the school. Yes, missionary schools didnt have much help from the government and we survived.. proudly I must say..
So, today, many decades later, I was asked to do a cake to celebrate Feast Day and when I went on to get the cake ready, all sorts of happy memories ran thru my mind. My gutsy headmistress who called us darlings..who lectured us unconditionally, over and over again about the many values that we must have to see us thru life.. A robust Irish woman who had no fear whatsoever.. who will go direct traffic every day and harassed overly protective parents "your darlings are not going to die if they have to walk further.. so, move along now and be considerate"..The rickety chairs and tables that are so battered but yet tell a thousand tales.. The loads of fun we had in school.. Sigh.. if only I could turn back time..
Yes, if I could turn back time, I would relive my school days again.. to hear the voice of my headmistress lecturing us for long period of time.. to sit at the thinking pond and woodlands.. to enjoy once again, Feast Day ala Sister Enda's way.. To Truth Through Charity.... and this cake is a reflection of this.
This orange butter cake weigh in at 3.5kg and was sold to my friend at a discounted price of RM250 to help raise funds for the Franciscan sisters. I was told the cake did very well... yay!!
